The LTL carrier utilizes data to save thousands of hours on inspections and technician labor, while also projecting substantial savings from fuel tax refunds.

XPO is a top less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation provider in North America. Based in Greenwich, Connecticut, the company's extensive network covers 99% of U.S. zip codes and extends to Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean.
Given XPO's scale, enhancing operational efficiency is a key priority. 'At XPO, we make significant investments in technology to drive innovation and continually improve the speed and quality of our service,' said Mike Gardner, the company's Director of Safety.
XPO has long invested in proprietary technology to enhance efficiency, safety, and customer service across its operations. To further optimize areas like inspections, asset utilization, maintenance, vehicle detention times, fuel consumption, and hours of service (HOS) tracking, they turned to Rushour. The team sought a comprehensive solution with an open, API-powered platform to convert data into actionable insights.
Most of XPO’s technology is proprietary and developed in-house. Although the company had an existing telematics solution, they chose to partner with Rushour due to a shared commitment to continuous innovation. 'One of the main reasons we selected Rushour is because it’s a tech-driven company with significant investment in R&D,' said Gardner. 'From the beginning, XPO has prioritized technology, making Rushour a natural partner.'
For the XPO team, Rushour also met their practical requirements. 'Rushour hardware is compact and straightforward, taking up minimal space on a vehicle,' explained John Maher, Director of Fleet Maintenance.
The XPO team has greatly valued Rushour's dedication to addressing their unique challenges. 'The Rushour team has been a reliable partner,' said Greg Pawelski, Vice President of Health & Safety. 'They consistently collaborate with us, brainstorming ways to enhance the safety and efficiency of our operations.'
After implementing Rushour, XPO has achieved significant efficiency improvements while maintaining its high standards for safety and customer service. Additionally, the company has converted these efficiency gains into cost savings. Using Rushour’s location and mileage data, XPO anticipates receiving annual fuel tax refunds. 'We’re leveraging Rushourto identify whether our vehicles are on public roads or private facilities and applying for off-highway fuel tax refunds, which we couldn’t previously capitalize on,' said Lanny Gower, Senior Tax Manager.
XPO has also adopted Rushourworkflows to boost driver efficiency. 'Rushourworkflows and dashboards have enhanced our visibility, allowing us to track miles more effectively and provide better driver coaching,' said Bean. Additionally, the transition from paper inspection forms to eDVIRs with Rushourhas saved thousands of hours annually. 'Saving a minute on each inspection form might not seem significant, but when you multiply that by three million trips per year, it adds up to a substantial amount,' Bean added.
Furthermore, with the Rushourplatform, XPO has integrated Rushourdata into their network via their line haul models and other proprietary software, leading to additional efficiencies. For example, the integration with Rushourand AssetWorks has significantly reduced labor time. 'We estimate saving thousands of hours in technician labor by automating tracking and streamlining maintenance processes,' said Bean. 'This integration eliminates manual tasks and improves efficiency for our technicians.'
Looking ahead, XPO plans to expand the deployment of Rushouracross their operations. 'We have a full slate of initiatives in progress, and we’re eager to bring them to fruition,' said Gardner. 'We anticipated improvements and benefits with Rushour, and we’re pleased to see that’s exactly what we’ve achieved.'
